TerraPower, the advanced nuclear energy startup backed by Bill Gates, is preparing to announce a new utility-scale nuclear power plant project designed specifically for data centers before the end of the year, according to a report from [TechCrunch](https://techcrunch.com/2026/08/19/terrapowers-nuclear-reactor-has-a-secret-weapon-for-powering-ai-data-centers/). The company is also targeting a second unit for 2027.

The move is a direct response to surging energy demand from artificial intelligence, as tech companies invest hundreds of billions in gigawatt-scale data center campuses. TerraPower describes itself as the only company currently building a utility-scale nuclear plant in the United States.

The company has a memorandum of understanding with Sabey Data Centers for a strategic collaboration to deploy its Natrium reactor technology into Sabey's data center operations. The planned reactor is intended to provide the clean, stable electricity required by power-intensive AI computing.

This expansion highlights how the global transition to AI is reconfiguring energy markets, pushing companies to seek power sources beyond the capacity limits of traditional electrical grids.
