Our Base44 review verdict: it's worth it for simple apps (internal tools, prototypes and small sites), where a built-in database, login and a $16/month starting price (billed annually) make it one of the cheapest serious ways to test an idea. Plan to move off it if you're building a backend-heavy SaaS, because rate limits (429 errors), bug-fix loops that burn credits, and GitHub export gated to the $40/month Builder plan are where long-term users hit the wall.

**How we reviewed it.** We're a product studio that builds web apps for founders, including two products in Base44's own category: [Mizu AI](/work/mizuai), an AI-native automation builder we took from zero to launch in 6 weeks, and [Mrsam AI](/work/mrsam), an AI website builder that raised a $500K seed. We have not built a client project on Base44, and we didn't run our own test app for this page. This review is based on Base44's pricing page and documentation (rechecked on October 6, 2026), independent reporting, a published security audit, and long-running Reddit threads from people who built real apps on it. We also sell custom builds, which is the "when you outgrow it" option at the end, so read that part knowing our bias.

Question

Short answer

Is Base44 good?

Yes for simple apps, internal tools and prototypes. Weak for backend-heavy products.

Is it legit?

Yes. Owned by Wix since June 2025, SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 per its security page.

What does it cost?

Free, then $16, $40, $80 or $160 a month billed annually.

Biggest catch

Backend functions and GitHub export start at Builder ($40/month annual), and yearly fees are non-refundable.

Who should skip it

Teams building a SaaS with heavy backend traffic, strict uptime needs or custom infrastructure.

## What is Base44?

Base44 is an AI app builder: you describe an app in plain English and it generates a working web app with the database, user login and analytics already wired in. It was built by solo founder Maor Shlomo, and ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=techcrunch.com&sz=64)[Wix bought it](https://techcrunch.com/2025/06/18/6-month-old-solo-owned-vibe-coder-base44-sells-to-wix-for-80m-cash/) for $80M in cash in June 2025, six months after launch, when it had a reported 250,000 users.

Two changes since then matter for this review:

* **Its own model.** In June 2026 Base44 began rolling out Base1, a model ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=techcrunch.com&sz=64)[trained on real user interactions](https://techcrunch.com/2026/06/29/vibe-coding-platform-base44-launches-own-model-as-ai-startups-seek-defensibility/), with the stated goal of being faster and cheaper than frontier models.
* **A standalone backend.** Base44's backend can now ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=base44.com&sz=64)[power any front end](https://base44.com/blog/base44-backend-platform), not only apps built in its editor.

## How much does Base44 cost?

Base44 has a free plan and four self-serve paid plans, plus Business and Enterprise tiers for organisations. Every paid price below is the yearly rate; Base44 says annual billing saves 20% on every paid plan.

Prices rechecked on October 6, 2026, from ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=base44.com&sz=64)[Base44's pricing page](https://base44.com/pricing) and its ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=base44.com&sz=64)[billing docs](https://docs.base44.com/Account-and-billing/Billing-and-plans.md). Monthly billing costs more than the rates above; we haven't listed those figures because the pricing page shows the yearly view by default.

**Two kinds of credit.** Message credits pay for asking the AI to build or change something. Integration credits pay for actions your live app takes, such as calling an AI model or sending an email. Base44 says exact usage "varies based on the action and the selected AI model", so you can't predict a month's spend to the credit. Third-party services you connect, such as Stripe or OpenAI, bill you directly.

**The worked math.** Per message credit, the four self-serve plans cost almost the same, so you're mostly paying for features and rate limits, not cheaper building:

*   Starter: $16 ÷ 100 credits = $0.16 per message credit
*   Builder: $40 ÷ 250 credits = $0.16
*   Pro: $80 ÷ 500 credits = $0.16
*   Elite: $160 ÷ 1,200 credits = about $0.13

The bigger number is the upfront bill. Annual plans are paid for the year, so Starter is $16 × 12 = $192 today, and Builder, the first plan with GitHub export, is $40 × 12 = $480. Base44's billing docs state that yearly fees are non-cancelable and non-refundable, and you can't switch an active yearly plan back to monthly yourself. If you're still deciding whether Base44 fits, start on Free or pay monthly first.

## Does Base44 really work?

Yes, for the kind of app it's built for. The users who stay positive describe the same shape of project: an internal tool, a tracker, a simple site, a first version to show people. The pattern in Base44's own subreddit is consistent, and so is where it stops.

[One user](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1luld15/comment/n1z15bn/) answered the question directly: "Does it work? Yes. Will it build complex apps? Probably not." Their builds were a time tracking app for employees, a data warehouse for a business group and a drink tracker. [Another](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1pnwv7l/comment/nubpy8j/) called it "an amazing tool for prototyping and website design" and rebuilt their agency site with it, but found that "as I've tried to build more complicated things, it starts to fail."

## What does Base44 get right?

**The backend comes with it.** Login, a database and analytics are on every plan, including Free. That's the part most non-technical founders get stuck on when they try to stitch tools together, and Base44 removes it.

**A low entry price.** Starter is $16 a month billed annually. For comparison, ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=lovable.dev&sz=64)[Lovable Pro](https://lovable.dev/pricing) and ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=bolt.new&sz=64)[Bolt Pro](https://bolt.new/pricing) list at $25 a month. Our [Lovable vs Bolt comparison](/blog/lovable-vs-bolt-vs-agency) covers how those two meter usage.

**You own what you build.** Base44's [pricing FAQ](https://base44.com/pricing) says you own your code, data and users, and two-way GitHub sync exports the full source to your own repo. People do use that exit: [one builder in r/Base44](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1vfdi0q/comment/p1qsnm9/) describes finishing a project there and then moving it to their own servers to keep improving it with Claude Code.

**Security basics are in place.** Base44's ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=base44.com&sz=64)[security page](https://base44.com/security) lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance on Wix's infrastructure, which is more than most tools in this category publish.

## What are the disadvantages of using Base44?

**Rate limits on backend-heavy apps.** This is the most specific complaint, and Base44's docs back it up. Its ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=base44.com&sz=64)[rate-limit reference](https://docs.base44.com/developers/references/apps-api/get-started/rate-limits.md) says going over returns a `429 Too Many Requests` error, that limits are counted per workspace rather than per user, and that a Free or Starter workspace gets the base allowance while Builder gets 2×, Pro 3× and Elite 5×. One builder who ran a platform with more than 1,200 paying students on Base44 summed it up: "It's not that Base44 works for few people, it's that it works for simple things," [they wrote](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1tswz83/you_were_right_i_was_wrong_base44_doesnt_cut_it/) on r/Base44. "If your system will have, for example, a lot of backend requests, you'll hit rate limits (429) all the time, and even after a lot of optimization, you'll keep running into problems."

The same post still calls Base44 "a fantastic tool for getting your dreams off the ground", which is a fair summary of the whole picture.

**The useful features sit behind Builder.** Backend functions (custom server logic), GitHub sync and model selection all start on Builder, $40 a month billed annually. On Free and Starter you can't export your code to GitHub, so "you own your code" only becomes practical once you pay $480 for the year. Base44's ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=base44.com&sz=64)[GitHub docs](https://docs.base44.com/developers/app-code/local-development/github.md) add one more catch: once you connect GitHub, you can't restore versions from before the connection. Since February 6, 2026, private apps also need Starter or above.

**Credits go to fixing, not only building.** Users describe more of their message credits going to repairs as an app grows. [One user](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1tkx4tn/have_you_ever_built_something_reliable_and/) put the trend plainly: "the more I advance in the elaboration of my app, the worst it gets to make it all run smoothly." Another heavy user is on Elite purely for the credits: "You do need to spend money though," [they wrote](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1luld15/comment/n1yqgwj/). "I'm currently in Elite with the number of credits I use." At $160 a month billed annually, that's $1,920 for the year.

**Platform changes you don't control.** Your app runs on Base44's infrastructure, so its updates and outages are yours too. One builder [warned in r/nocode](https://www.reddit.com/r/nocode/comments/1rtpoh8/serious_warning_about_base44_dont_use_it_for_real/): "Every time I get close to launching, Base44 updates something on their end — and breaks the app. Consistently." [Another builder](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1qurl63/comment/o3cqtl9/), writing after an outage before an investor demo, framed the real issue as control: "It's not about owning the code per se, it's about adaptability and control."

The shared platform also means shared security risk. In July 2025, ![](https://www.google.com/s2/favicons?domain=wiz.io&sz=64)[Wiz Research](https://www.wiz.io/blog/critical-vulnerability-base44) found a flaw that let anyone register an account on private, SSO-only Base44 apps using a non-secret app ID. Base44 fixed it in under 24 hours and Wix found no evidence it had been abused. It's fixed and over a year old, but it shows the trade: one platform bug can reach every app on it at once.

## Can you make money with Base44?

Yes, and the clearest examples follow the same path: Base44 gets the idea in front of paying users, then the product moves to a codebase the team controls. The builder with 1,200 paying students migrated off. Another, who now runs a paid service for a tennis club, moved to VS Code and Copilot for production and still credits Base44 for the start: "Still, if it hadn't been for base44 quick prototyping, I may had never reached that point, so credits given there, too," [they wrote](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1pnwv7l/comment/oq8gnjn/).

Switching isn't a cure either. As [another r/Base44 user](https://www.reddit.com/r/Base44/comments/1luld15/comment/n1yrn39/) noted, all of these vibe coding apps have bugs, "so switching for one issue might just lead you to dealing with another more frustrating one." If you're comparing tools rather than leaving the category, our [vibe coding tools roundup](/blog/best-vibe-coding-tools-founders-use-2026), [Lovable alternatives](/blog/lovable-alternatives-for-startups-production) and [Bolt.new alternatives](/blog/bolt-new-alternatives-for-founders-production-apps) pages cover the options side by side.

## Who is Base44 for, and who should skip it?

**Choose Base44 if:**

* You're a non-technical founder testing whether anyone wants the idea, and a working demo beats a slide deck.
* You need an internal tool for your team: a tracker, a dashboard, an intake form with a database behind it.
* You want a simple site or app with login and data, and you'd rather not connect separate services yourself.

**Skip it, or plan to move off it, if:**

* Your product's core is heavy backend traffic: many requests per user, background jobs, real-time features. That's where the 429 limits bite.
* You need guaranteed uptime for paying customers or investors, or compliance terms your own infrastructure has to meet.
* You'll need a developer to own the code long term. You can export it from Builder up, but plan the move before the app gets large.

## What should you do before taking a Base44 app to production?

If you keep a Base44 app live with real users, cover the basics first. One [experienced builder](https://www.reddit.com/r/nocode/comments/1rtpoh8/comment/p76lwop/) summed up the priorities for apps on these platforms: "Lock down your data first (these backends leave tables readable by default, that's the big one), put real auth on every route, and keep secrets off the client." Then:

1. **Check who can read each data table** before inviting real users.
2. **Move to Builder and connect GitHub early**, so your full history lives in your own repo.
3. **Watch your workspace's 429s.** If they appear with a handful of users, they will get worse with more.
4. **Decide your exit point in advance**: a user count, a revenue number or a feature that Base44 can't support.

When you hit that point, the choice is between patching the existing app and rebuilding it properly. Our guide to [fixing vs rebuilding a no-code MVP](/blog/fix-no-code-mvp-rebuild) walks through that call, and [vibe coding vs traditional development](/blog/vibe-coding-vs-traditional-development) covers the trade-offs in general. A rebuild with us is a fixed-price [Launch Sprint at $6,500](/pricing), usually 4–5 weeks. That's the wrong choice if you haven't validated the idea yet: stay on Base44 until you have users asking for more than it can do.

### Does Base44 really work?

Yes, for simple apps. Users report it working well for internal tools, trackers, websites and prototypes. It struggles with complex, backend-heavy apps, where builders report rate-limit errors and growing bug-fix loops.

### How much does Base44 cost to use?

Base44 has a free plan, then Starter at $16, Builder at $40, Pro at $80 and Elite at $160 a month, all billed annually (prices checked October 6, 2026). Annual billing saves 20% compared with paying monthly, but yearly fees are non-refundable.

### Is Base44 free?

There's a free plan with 25 message credits and 100 integration credits a month, up to 5 apps, and core features like login, a database and analytics. Private apps, custom domains and code export need a paid plan.

### What are the disadvantages of using Base44?

The main ones are API rate limits (429 errors) on backend-heavy apps, backend functions and GitHub export only from the $40/month Builder plan, credits spent on fixing bugs as apps grow, and dependence on Base44's platform for uptime and updates.

### Is Base44 legit?

Yes. Base44 is owned by Wix, which bought it for $80M in June 2025, and its security page lists SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001 and GDPR compliance. A critical login flaw found by Wiz in July 2025 was fixed within 24 hours.

### Can you make money with Base44?

Yes. Builders in r/Base44 describe paid products that started on Base44, including a platform with more than 1,200 paying students. The common pattern is to validate on Base44, then move the product to a codebase you control as it grows.
